The Horseless Team Event

What is it?  A fabulous run ( or walk ) around the beautiful Badminton estate, following the course usually tackled on horseback, but, as the name suggests, "without horses!"

When was it first held?   The first HTE was run in 1984 when444 runners competed, raising £3,334 for charity.

How far is it?     There is a 9 mile course for athletes and a 5 mile course for fun runners and walkers.

How tough is it?   The course is mostly flat and, if it wasn't for the jumps, would be very easy. In fact, a lot of the walkers go around the jumps and enjoy a morning stroll through magnificent countryside. BUT, if you tackle the obstacles,  it's a real challenge. Think of a jump up to 2 metres high, with a ditch before or after, perhaps on a slope.... Get the picture! There's even a lake to cross---cools your aching feet nicely!! ( click here for some pictures ).

How long does it take to get around?  The serious runners complete the 5 mile course in about 30 minutes and the 9 mile course in about 56 minutes. Fun runners average about 45 minutes for the 5 mile course and walkers take up to 2 hours.

The Reward?   Immense personal satisfaction on crossing the finishing line, where everyone receives an HTE commemorative medal. There are nine team and and individual cups to be won.

How many compete?  The event now attracts over 1000 runners and walkers, most of whom return every year, many in fancy dress. Over £275,000 has now been raised for local and national charities since 1984.
